5Works great! But so did the Old Style  Mar 24, 2003 By H. Row "in1ear"
I like the old separate foam wet filter and paper cylinder for dry pickup, simply because cleanup of the foam filter was so easy and you could get all the gunk out of it. I have used my shop-vac to empty a small manmade water feature with a pond in the backyard. The seaweed groaties washed out of the old foam wet pick up filter completely.
With the new materials being used for filters on various equipment, the new multitask (wet/dry) filter is alot more durable but still harder to clean than the simple foam filter.
There is also the extra expense. This type filter costs more initially.
Oh well, the cost of progress, I guess.
All in All, I still think Shop-Vac makes the best shop / wet-dry / worksite vacuum on the market.

4Good Filter, but wish it lasted longer  Jul 30, 2008 By Johnson
Like most homeowners I do a variety of jobs around the house that require various tools. My wet/dry vac is one of the most important tools to me (or more importantly my wife) as it helps me clean up all the messes I make when doing these jobs. This filter does a great job when it is new as it keeps all the dirt/sawdust/leaves/etc I pick up with it in the container. However, after using it sporadically over a few months the filter gets clogged with all these various things, especially if there is any moisture. When I try and clean it out it works ok but not great as it just continues to get clogged. Overall it does what it is supposed to I just don't like replacing the filter every few months....

4No more dog smell  Feb 25, 2008 By R. Tang
Finally replaced the original filter that came with my 5 gal Shop Vac with this dry/wet cartridge filter and wondered why I waited so long to do it. I used my Shop Vac to vacuum the fur my German Shepards left behind in the garage and it use to smell like a dirty dog everytime I turned it on. Now, with the new catridge filter, no more bad smell and my Shop Vac operates at optimum efficiency.

4Does the job, but could be better quality / washable  Sep 21, 2011 By MasterCraft "Stars & Stripes"
These do the job well if changed frequently. If you use it with the vac in "wet" mode it still gets awfully wet and the paper becomes very fragile and susceptible to rips. If you switch back to "dry" mode before the filter is completely dry itself, the residual moisture in the paper fibers collect and trap dirt, essentially clogging the filter. It works flawlessly for dry-only use, but an ash bag is needed if you want to keep it really clean in dusty environments. Lastly, this filter would be an ideal permanent solution if it were a washable, oil-able material such as the K&N auto filters.

1This filter is junk  Aug 28, 2011 By Gerald Chiaramonte
Filtered OK when dry. When I tried to rinse it, it disintegrated. The paper just seemed to dissolve. Very disappointed especially considering it is a name brand. I will not buy this filter again. To replace it, I bought a shop vac "ultra web." More expensive, but it seems a lot sturdier. We'll see how it holds up.
