5Great value on a great inverter, just bought a second one  Jul 31, 2011 By Mr. Steve W. Robertson
To clarify information missing in the advertisement, this inverter provides 2,000 watt continuous, 2,500 watts up to 10 minutes, and up to 5,000 watts "surge" (startup) power. The unit, like most inverters, generators, and UPS units provides modified-sine wave electricity which may not work on solid-state devices that require pure sine wave power (like laser printers), but so far it has powered everything that I have hooked up to it.

I purchased this inverter as an alternative to buying a generator to use while camping on some land that I bought. I don't know why it comes with four cables but I hooked them all up to clamps that I put on the car battery when I use the inverter, making it truly portable. I used cable ties to keep the four cables tidy. It is a powerful inverter. I tested it on a dehumidifier, a large motor, a microwave, lights, a space heater, basically just about everything you need to power, this inverter will power it. It has three plugs, however you can use a power strip if you need to plug more than three items into it.

I did some research, and this is about as large of an inverter that you can hook up to a running vehicle without quickly draining the battery. An inverter uses about 90 amps per 1,000 watts of consumed power. The alternator on a modern vehicle generates 20-50 amps at idle and about 120-150 amps at 2,500 RPM. In other words, an inverter used at 1,000 watts continuous on an idling vehicle will start to deplete the battery. Some vehicles have more powerful alternators which can supply enough amperage to run 2,000 watts indefinitely. The 2,500 watt continuous (for up to 10 minutes) advertised by this inverter is probably a limitation of the vehicle and battery's output, and maybe not a limitation of the inverter itself. You can buy larger and more expensive inverters, but it is unlikely your vehicle has the capability to generate enough amperage to run anything beyond 2,000 watts for any length of time. If you need more than 2,000 watts of power you will need a second vehicle and a second inverter, not just a larger inverter. You cannot use more than about 200 watts without running your vehicle's engine with any type of inverter for any length of time or else your battery will be drained. Inverters are frequently advertised as being hooked up to a vehicle battery (and they have to be) but it is really your vehicle's alternator that powers the inverter.

Since I'm going to be leaving the inverter on my land, I purchased a second one of these inverters for my house for emergency power. It replaces a 1,000 watt inverter that I've found to be inadequate as it doesn't have enough capability for the start-up surge requirements of larger appliances.

I have a 1400/2000 watt generator that does not handle the surge demands of starting some appliances that this inverter handles with ease. The generator may use less gas than running a vehicle but a generator is substantially more noisy, polluting, and frequently difficult to start. Generators are also big, heavy, and clumsy to move around. This inverter is an excellent choice for backup power or locations where the grid is unavailable. The price and free shipping (this unit is heavy) simply cannot be beat. I'm glad I purchased a second one at this price.

This inverter includes cables for permanent installation (not all inverters include cables). They are of decent length and very thick. For temporary use you'll need to add your own battery clamps. You can buy some here on Amazon for less than $10.00 that qualify for free shipping. Or if you buy two of these units you can scavenge the clamps off a set of jumper cables.

I have not yet used the inverter for prolonged periods of time, but I will modify this review if necessary after I do. During testing it performed at least as well as advertised and I was happy enough with the purchase that I bought a second one.

3Nice Looking, short warranty, check it as soon as it arrives...  Aug 22, 2011 By D. White
A very heavy-duty inverter which is probably overkill for many people, but at a killer price ($105 shipped) at Amazon now.

One thing that differentiates it from the Cobra or Whistler inverters of the same size sold on Amazon at a 50% to 80% higher price is that they come with a 2-year warranty. This comes with a 90-day warranty, and it won't be that cheap to ship on your own nickel back to Pennsylvania. I got two of them at this price, and I tested them. The first one worked fine as I put it through its paces, the second one was broken out of the box... it supplied AC power, but the green "battery drain" LED meter didn't work (no huge deal), and the cooling fans didn't go on, which IS a big deal. I had to return it.

So the current upfront cost is killer, but if the thing dies in the first two years, you might be wishing you bought the Cobra or the Whistler unit.

I wonder whether one of those add-on warranties would be worthwhile? hmmm.

Anyhow, there's my 2 cents worth. All I have done so far is test them. if you get one, do NOT leave it in the box for long; you'll want to test it inside Amazon's return window, and definitely within the first 90 days.

5Very heavy duty!  Jul 04, 2011 By Dan S. "life for fun and profit"
These are heavier duty then you think and certainly more than the description shares.

I purchased this as a large capacity inverter system for my truck. It is a continuous duty inverter with DUAL positive and negative cables. I have no idea why they are like that but it won't run without all of them hooked up.

This inverter never shuts off fully. The switch will only shutoff the AC output, the DC continues to draw power so I'll wire in a switch and relay to prevent dead batteries. It's best to use this while the vehicle is running because the power draw is too much for a car battery and not much better for dual truck batteries. I'd recommend a secondary deep cycle battery for the inverter system.

Overall, it's a serious system for hardcore electricity when there's no outlet at the campsite. I'd recommend it for those who know how to run cables or know those who do.

Buy it and enjoy some extra freedom!

5Interesting little unit.  Sep 15, 2011 By nasse
So, I bought this from Amazon, thinking there's not much way it could deliver 2500w for only $104. Well, it came in yesterday, so I did some basic testing with it. I had access to a number of ~105Ah 12V marine batteries, so I hooked up one (only one) of dubious history (charge/discharge abuse and lack of maintenance). First test: 10A (nameplace) shop vac. Ran it without any issues. Next: hot air gun (1200W nameplace). Again, no problem. Next, shop vac and hot air gun at the same time. Still, no issues (LED bar shows about 70% use). Then I added a small vacuum pump (4A nameplate) at the same time, and finally it started complaining, not of overload but of low input voltage (battery had a terminal voltage of 11.2 with a draw of ~1000+1200+500 / 0.87 = 3 kW = over 250A!).

Next test: space heater. Hooked up a 1500W unit, no issue. Added the 1200 hot air gun, no issue (battery is again pushing over 250A out so terminal voltage is sagging, but I had hooked up a charger at the same time to give a small boost). Finally added the vacuum pump, and the alarm went off again, but it was still the undervoltage alarm due to the weak battery (11.2v and dropping). LED bar was showing 90%, so this was the limit.

Conclusion: This will do the job, for possibly even more than the nameplate rating. You'll need serious lead acid battery capacity for any real use, as if I ran a 2500W load from one 100Ah battery, it would be dead in less than 15 minutes or so (250A+ from a 105Ah/20Hr rated battery means the useful capacity will be closer to 50Ah, peukert's law..) Included cables are a real bonus, buying premade or even making them yourself isn't cheap.

Aside: don't plug in an isolation transformer to this device, it started buzzing quite a bit.

5Heavy and Heavy Duty  Jul 18, 2011 By Russel W Carty
The Roadpro RPPI-2500W 2000/5000 Watt DC to AC Power Inverter is just the ticket for an AC power source when camping or powering electric tools on the go. The output is very generous as inverters go and the unit is loaded with safety features. Quality construction causes me to believe the unit will last, although I have only had it a short time. I plan to install it permanently in my truck cab or tool box for convenience and security. A disconnect switch will make sure there is no unintentional discharge of the battery. Amazon Prime value and rapid delivery made for an amazing deal.
