Perfect for big generators Jul 19, 2008
By Kevin Nicholls
"jaded, aging hipster"
I like to keep my generator as far away from my house as possible, during outages. I knew I needed about 40 - 50 feet, but had a rough time finding a decent quality cable that could handle my generator's load for under $200.
Just as I was about to make my own cable, I stumbled across this and gave it a shot. I figured, worst case, I'm looking at return shipping to Amazon.
Well, I got lucky twice. This cable is 10 gage (not 12, as described), which was EXACTLY what I was going to make myself. That put it totally within spec for my 8,500 watt generator. And the second stroke of luck? This thing is HEAVY! Total quality here, and I couldn't be happier.
If you bought one of the Reliance Controls transfer switches, this is just what you need if you find the included 20' cable isn't quite enough.

Great Cord Feb 04, 2009

When paired with an electric generator, this is an excellent cord. It is made with #10 wire and is easy to coil and store. A high quality item that is cheaper than the shorter cords.

Top quality cord Aug 10, 2010

Reliance Controls PC3040 40-Feet 30-Amp L14-30 Generator Power Cord
This is a high-quality 10 gage 4-conductor power cord, with an excellent molded plug and receptacle. Just as importantly, the sheathing is rubber, so the cord remains flexible in very cold weather. If you need a 40 foot generator cord and your generator has a NEMA L14-30 receptacle, this is an excellent choice.
While the plug end of this cord plugs into your generator, the receptacle end typically plugs into a box mounted on your house such as the Reliance Controls PB30 L14-30 30 Amp Generator Power Cord Inlet Box. See Customer Images.

Good Cord but.... Dec 14, 2011
By Big Bert Like others I received a 50 foot version of a generic power cord in yellow instead of the PC3040 cord I ordered. The shipping box appeared to have photocopied labels from a PC3040 cord.
The cord I received was made in China (of course) and seemed to me to be more generic than the Reliance Controls Brand I was expecting.
While the cord is heavy duty, extra long and will do the job, I was a little disappointed I did not receive exactly what I ordered. I kept it because I can use the extra length and the price was ok....

Heavy Duty, but STIFF in cold weather. Dec 13, 2011
By M. Rosen I ordered a 40-foot cord and to my surprise I received a 50-foot cord. There was a little sticker on the box that said "Bonus - The 40' cord was replaced with a 50' cord". It's a very heavy duty cord with molded plugs. I was surprised, however, that the cord was yellow instead of the black cord pictured on Amazon's web site. Also, I was surprised that the cord is NOT very flexible in cold weather. The 10' black cord that came with my transfer switch seems more flexible than this yellow one. Not sure if it's a different kind of rubber or what, but I was a bit disappointed in this cord. I got it for a great price and it's a nice quality cord, but I wish it was better suited for cold weather. That's why I gave it 4 stars and not 5.
Upon closer inspection I see that this cord is NOT made by Reliance Controls, and is NOT rated at -40c (-40F) like my Reliance Controls cord is, but rather it says 60c (140F) on it! This cord is NOT MADE for cold weather. While I appreciate the great price of $99 for this cord, I do NOT appreciate being DUPED by Amazon or whoever is responsible. I would have gladly paid more money for the cord that I wanted. Shame on AMAZON for MISREPRESENTATION!
Buyer beware! The cord selling for $99 is NOT made by Reliance Controls, and is not of the same quality.
