Very tight fit Aug 16, 2008
By Lawrence E. Skoczen The IR panel has a spring-loaded locking pin that locks into the hot-shoe of the camera. My D300 has a recess hole that this pin falls into, making it near impossible to remove by pulling it back out. I was forced to pull up on the top side of the pin to unseat it. I have since took a metal file and filed the pin down to a more manageable size. Otherwise, the IR panel works great and I do not have to worry about exposure from the pop-up flash. Worth the investment.

Must have for Wireless Flash Jan 08, 2010
By David Ausman

This is a must have item if you own any brand of camera that triggers wireless flashes with the pop-up camera flash. I am using this on my Olympus E-30 because the pop-up flash does have quite a bit of influence on exposure when using several wireless flashes. I noticed this if I am within ten feet of the subject. The only way I have found to eliminate this effect is with this product or with a makeshift item made out of a matchbook. It still allows the light to come out of the side of the flash and trigger the wireless flashes but no light goes forward and hits the subject. This is my most favorite accesory in my camera bag. Good job Nikon.

Worth every penny! Mar 04, 2009
By Caldernok This product does exactly what it should. For the price you cannot beat it. The reason why I did not give this 5 stars was because it was extremely hard to take it out of the hot shoe for the first couple of times. After breaking it in...it works fine. Oh and I did take a picture in the mirror, and it completely blocks the pre-flash pulse :). VERY NICE!

Pros and cons Sep 22, 2010
By Dean Zatkowsky I use Nikon's CLS system with a D300, SB800, and SB600. I wanted this device to eliminate the extra catchlight produced by the D300's pop-up flash when used in Commander mode. The SG-31R indeed prevents the extra catchlight, but it also seems to reduce the effective distance of the infrared trigger. Since I tend to shoot portraits with a fairly long lens from across the studio, this sometimes causes inconsistent firing in my background flash. Easy to workaround once I noticed it.

Necessary for using an off-camera wireless flash unit with camera as commander Aug 17, 2010
By joyello18 Bought this to use the Nikon SB-900 flash strobe wirelessly (slave) with the Nikon D90 (commander). After learning that I could not turn off my Nikon D90's pop-up flash (because the pop-up has to flash in order to trigger the SB-900 when the SB-900 is off the camera), I bought this inexpensive piece of plastic to block the light from the pop-up flash. It works perfectly! I'm sure it does not block the light 100%, but it is certainly over 90%, and certainly sufficient for what I was trying to accomplish.
Now I can place my SB-900 as side light, or back light, for a stark artistic effect, and not have any front light from the pop-up flash. If you have multiple flash units, you may not need this, since you could use an off-camera flash as the commander.
If you are using your camera's onboard flash as a commander, but don't want it to be part of your lighting, you need this. It is waaay cheaper than purchasing a dedicated external commander unit. I 100% recommend this product!
