4Get this cord kit unless hard-wiring your disposer...  Mar 07, 2008 By Victor H. Agresti "remodeling-guy"
InSinkErator Power Cord Kit #CRD-00

This cord kit will work with any brand/model of disposer.

InSinkErator disposers do not include a cord in the box because many installers will choose to use non-metallic (NM) sheathed cable (e.g., Romex® brand) hard-wired directly to the disposer. If a power cord was included, those customers would be paying for a cord they didn't need.

If the disposer won't be hard-wired, connect this power cord kit to the disposer, and plug the cord into a receptacle inside the sink-base cabinet.

If there is no receptacle there, you can:

a) hire an electrician to install one
b) obtain a homeowner electrical permit from your local government, do it yourself, and have it inspected
c) do it yourself without a permit (a violation in most jurisdictions)

Since many homeowner's will choose "c", here are some suggestions for installing a new receptacle inside the sink-base cabinet:

- turn the power for the disposer circuit off at the main panel;
- feed the disposer's existing NM cable coming from the wall into the rear of a steel surface mounted utility (or recessed) electric box. Remove a knock-out from the steel box and install a 3/8" connector to protect the cable.
- The National Electric Code(NEC) requires a box for a disposer to be "accessible"; it cannot be hidden, such as behind the dishwasher.
- secure the bare ground wire from the NM cable to the steel box with a machine screw used for no other purpose, and to the grounding terminal on the receptacle.
- secure the white wire to the receptacle's silver terminal and the black wire to the gold terminal.
- turn the power on and use a receptacle tester (sold by Amazon & others) to verify proper receptacle wiring.

Many flat electric cords like this one do not have color coded hot and neutral wires (usually black and white respectively). With this SPECIFIC cord:

- the neutral and hot wires are both black;
- the neutral wire's insulation is ribbed for identification; connect it to the white wire from the disposer;
- attach the un-ribbed wire to the disposer's black wire;
- attach the green wire to the ground screw in the disposer's built-in electric "box".

Any flexible three-wire cord could be used for a disposer, as long as it meets specific rules for insulation thickness, moisture resistance, proper gauge, and cord length (18" to 36"). This cord meets Underwriter's Laboratory and National Electrical Code standards.

I found the two included wire-nuts to be too small and used larger wire-nuts from my stock. One star off for that. Other than that, this cord kit is just fine.

5Good kit  Sep 30, 2008 By Mark
I purchased this kit with the InSinkErator SinkTop Switch #STS-00 to save me the time of having to make a cable. It is a complete kit with good quality cable that makes the install a snap. I would buy it again.

5Annoyed this didn't already come with the unit, but has all you need  Dec 23, 2007 By Writeb "writeb"
Per the title, I was annoyed this wasn't already bundled with my compact Evolution garbage disposal unit; but at least it's somewhat reasonably priced, and if you go through Amazon, you can get free super saver shipping. To reiterate, you basically need this item to install your Evolution line disposal.

Overall, I handed this and the disposal unit over to my contractor, and he had it set up in very short order. The disposal, this power cord package and an existing power switch outlet is all you need to get this up and running.

4Plug and play  Nov 20, 2008 By J. Tsai
Easy to install and allows you to plug your food disposal into an outlet instead of hard-wiring it. Arrives quickly and isn't expensive.

5disposal cord  Mar 20, 2012 By J. Patterson "JP"
Makes hooking up and servicing the disposal a lot easier, convenient length ,about 36 inches ,that includes a romex connector ( stain relief).
